Every group has a distinct character and power and is always more than the sum of its individual parts.
Facilitating groups can be like journeying without a map - often difficult, intense, challenging and stimulating.
Group facilitators can become the receptacle for the group's negativity and projections. The course aims to elicit each member's unique ability, and develop their confidence in facilitating therapeutic groups - by exploring with them their ability to use themselves to harness the strength of the group to empower individual members.
This 7 day (one weekend per month + one Saturday) training will cover the characteristics of group work: tasks, facilitator styles, models, interventions, dynamics and processes, boundaries and inherent difficulties. By the end of the course members should have developed:
Participants wishing to facilitate therapeutic groups will need to have a minimum of two years post-qualification experience and be currently working as a counsellor or psychotherapist. Hold a Diploma level in counselling or psychotherapy qualification, or equivalent.
Participants wishing to facilitate non-therapeutic groups: this course is suitable for anyone wishing to improve leading, working with or training groups/teams. E.g. Coaches, trainers and those who have group work experience and are facilitating workshops and training courses.
Prior experience of facilitating groups is needed in order to attend.
Because of the experiential nature of this training, the course requires you to be willing to take part in skills practice - either as a facilitator or as a group member - and discussions and to use your own experience as material to learn from. Self-reflective skills will be needed in order to look at the self in relation to groups. This includes the requirement to express yourself clearly, fluently and accurately.
This course also meets the requirements of NCS Advanced Specialist Training status for individuals who complete the course and who are already a qualified/experienced practitioner of counselling, psychotherapy or a closely related activity such as coaching. This recognition is subject to individuals, who have completed the course, providing proof of their qualifications to the Spirit Project - if the criteria are met then the Spirit Project can provide an advanced specialist training certificate to the individual.
